5 Things you won’t regret investing in this winter

Oh hey! It’s just me about to help you justify spending more money on clothes again, so you’re going to want to read this.

Back in September I challenged myself to go a whole month without shopping, and man it was tough, but it did make me appreciate the things in my wardrobe that I do truly love. Although the basis of the challenge was to save money and try to curb my sometimes out of control spending habits, it made me realise that actually investing more money on something of a better quality is way more sustainable than going crazy in Primark.

Now, raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimised by the lady at the Primark checkout? Admit it, we all have a habit of frantically shoving things in the basket purely because they’re cheap. I mean, who am I to refuse a cute knit for just £10? For real though – you went in for a pair of socks and came out £60 down. How did that even happen? Quite a substantial amount of money gone on things I’ll probably never wear…

Anyway, over the past while, there are some things I just never regret investing a little more money in and wear over and over again.

A tailored wool coat

Yep, it’s maybe a little safe (ok, maybe even boring) but a classic wool coat is totally practical and timeless. I allowed myself a little splurge back in 2016 after graduating because I found that most of my coats were looking tired, worn, and buttonless (Topshop, I’m pointing at you). I do still enjoy wearing more out-there trend driven coats – I’m like 100% after a colourful fur jacket – but I’ll never regret investing in a simple wool coat that will last through the years.

A well fitting hat

I rarely leave my flat without one – even if it means stuffing my fedora with socks to make it fit my tiny head. Hats are totally my thing (along with coats, shoes, and bags, but yeah…) and it’s pretty much an ongoing struggle trying to find one that’s small enough for a child size noggin’. Which is why when I do come across a gem thats not actually made for kids and isn’t covered in butterflies or bows, I’m all over it like a rash. And I’m definitely willing to drop £40 on a Brixton hat if it means I don’t need to walk around with underwear stuffed inside it just to fill up the gaps. Also, I’d just like to clarify, when I say a fell fitting hat. I mean several, i.e. a beanie, a fedora, a baker boy, and a beret. A hat for every occasion, shall we say.

A trusty turtle neck

Ah, the all time winter staple. Turtle necks are the ultimate layering piece for the colder season. In previous years I shied away from high neck tops, particularly the fitted kind, fearing that they made highlighted my chubby chin(s) but actually I’ve discovered that no one really cares about your slight double chin except you. Embrace those chins. Also, they come in super handy in literally any ‘I have nothing to wear’ moment. Need a top to wear with your A-line skirt? Check. Want something to layer under your cord pinafore? Got you covered. Desperate to wear a shirt but it’s too chilly outside? Get layering. Basically, you’ll never regret picking up a few of these babies, and why not pick up different colours whilst you’re at it.

Sunglasses

If you’re that person who’s all ‘why would you buy sunglasses in the winter?’ please leave. Lol, just kidding, but seriously aren’t you aware that the sun is super low and super bright? I’ve got a headache just thinking about all of the squinting you must be doing…

Black ankle boots

I feel I speak for most when I say that ankle boots are outfit savers. Whether you want to dress up a pair of jeans or go casual in a pair of chelsea boots, a trusty pair of boots will always be there for you (god, I’ve just heard myself). But really, I never look back after spending a little bit more money on a pair of boots that get me through the season year after year. And FYI, Office do some pretty great pairs…

Are there certain items you never feel guilty spending money on? When I know i’m going to wear something to death (i.e. a super soft turtle neck) then I feel it’s totally justified.

Hello! I'm a pint-sized marketing graduate in Edinburgh. I spend too much time scrolling through Instagram, drinking copious amounts of coffee and thinking about what colour of lipstick works best with my outfit.
