So it started out as dinner. Maybe a few glasses of wine just because, well, its the weekend. Those couple of rosés soon turn into cocktails… then before you know it you’re doing shots of tequila at the bar. Yep, it happens to the best of us.
If you’re anything like me and are just completely useless with a hangover (no amount of water or paracetamol before bed will fix it), you’ll understand the pains of actually getting yourself out of bed and not looking like a train-wreck. Although its easy to hide under the duvet and spend the entire day watching repeats of Come Dine With Me (guilty) and eating everything you can get your hands on (I recommend a burrito), there’s nothing worse than catching glimpses of the blue sky in the gaps of the curtains and feeling like you’re wasting a perfectly nice day – its Scotland, this is RARE.
I’m sure we all have our little pick-me-ups that make us feel a little more human the morning after the night before, but for me the right clothes – and coffee, obviously – make a huge difference. So here are the 5 things that make me feel and hopefully look more fresh than I actually am.
1. Get Some Exercise
Now I know you’re probably thinking this is the worst possible idea when you’re feeling a little under the weather, but it definitely helps. I’d never go full-out for 45 minutes on the cross-trainer, but even 20 minutes light cardio is enough to get me out of a slump. Plus, I feel slightly less guilty about all of the wine I drank the night before.
2. Take Your Time Getting Ready
Take a long shower. Do that intense conditioning treatment. Put on that face mask. If you’re guilty of not taking your makeup off before bed after a night out, its nice to take time to pamper yourself.
3. Dress Smart
While its tempting to slip straight into joggers and a sweatshirt – which by all means look great if you’re lucky enough to be one of those women who make everything look chic. Sadly, I need to make a little bit more effort, but that’s okay because it makes me feel 100% better. I usually go for black jeans, a shirt, pointed shoes, and a hat – the usual.
4. Wear Minimal Makeup
As much as I love a matte bold lip and contouring my moon-face to the maximum, a) I don’t have the patience for this when I’m hungover and b) my skin needs a break. Although illuminating primer and powders are my best friend – sometimes you just gotta fake that healthy glow.
5. Get Outside
By the time I’m finally dressed and ready to embrace the outside world (scary, I know), fresh air is well and truly welcomed. My favourite thing to do is wander around town, get some coffee and some lunch then by the time I get back I can slip back into my PJs and relax, content in the knowledge that I’ve done something with my day.
